Over $50k raised for Okanagan youth homelessness prevention programs
Over $50,000 was raised at the inaugural Hockey Helps the Homeless tournament in support of initiatives combating youth homelessness in the Okanagan.
“This significant sum is a testament to the power of collective action when it comes to addressing critical social issues,” said Richelle Leckey, Manager of Fund Development and Donor Relations for BGC Okanagan.
Hockey Helps the Homeless is a one-day charity hockey tournament, held on April 5, 2024, where people of all genders played with hockey greats while raising funds to support programs run by BGC Okanagan.
From Puck to Purpose: How Hockey Helps Prevent Youth Homelessness
The funds raised at the tournament are set to make a tangible difference in the lives of youth in the Okanagan region. Specifically, they will be directed towards two vital programs: Shelter Diversion and Upstream Kelowna. These initiatives are dedicated to providing proactive support to youth at risk of homelessness and school disengagement, aiming to intervene before crises occur.
The impact of exposure to homelessness at a young age cannot be understated. Research has shown that such experiences can have long-lasting effects, contributing to chronic homelessness, as well as complex health and mental health problems. By addressing these issues early on, programs like Upstream Kelowna offer a beacon of hope for youth in need.
“Through a proactive approach, BGC Okanagan and its community support partners identify youth who require assistance and provide them with the resources and support they need to thrive. By intervening before situations escalate into full-blown crises, these programs are not only changing lives but also breaking the cycle of homelessness and despair,” said Leckey.
None of this would have been possible without the generous contributions of our donors and sponsors. BGC Okanagan extends our heartfelt thanks to all who supported the event, including our presenting sponsors Peacock Sheridan Group and Value Partners Investments. Your generosity is truly making a difference in the lives of young people in our community.
