Building Futures: How BGC Okanagan Transforms Lives Beyond the Club

For the Welfing family, BGC Okanagan has been more than a place for their children to spend time – it’s been a second home.

“Our children met many new friends over the years at BGC Okanagan. Through the Club, they are given the opportunity to try many new activities that they may not have gotten to experience otherwise. BGC Okanagan provides them with a positive outlet outside of the home,” said Tyler Welfing, whose children attend BGC Okanagan programs.

Families like the Welfings are why the annual Pink Shirt Day Breakfast, presented by TELUS Business, is so important. This sold-out event, at the Laurel Packing House on Feb. 26, not only brought the community together in support of kindness and inclusion but also helped raise over $25,000 to continue creating safe, inclusive spaces for children, youth, and families across the Okanagan.

How BGC Okanagan Helps Kids Thrive

During the event, BGC Okanagan proudly announced its Building Futures campaign, a fundraising initiative designed to raise awareness and funding for vital programs that serve children and youth.

“For many families, BGC Okanagan is a lifeline, providing more than just child care. The programs offer confidence, connection, and opportunity. They ensure that every child, regardless of financial situation, can access enriching activities, supportive mentors, and a safe place to grow,” said Jeremy Welder, BGC Okanagan CEO.

With community support, BGC Okanagan can continue offering programs that keep costs low and accessibility high. For example, many recreation programs at Clubs are free with a yearly membership of just $10 – removing barriers and ensuring no child is left behind.

As part of the Building Futures campaign, you can bid on a one-of-a-kind carved wooden bear, with all proceeds helping to keep essential programs affordable and accessible for families. This art piece was kindly donated by Welfing, owner of CarveWel Creations, known for his impressive wood and ice sculptures.

Welfing wanted to give back after seeing firsthand the positive impact BGC Okanagan has on his children. Bids or donations can be made by visiting www.bgco.ca/building-futures.
